Butterflies
Jesus
You radiate a peace that passes
my understanding
Butterflies swarm around you; the happiest of men
Little birds land on your shoulders, unafraid
Flowers, spring up where you walk
When you speak, the sun shines brighter
And your smile makes the river babble
Animals follow behind you in curiosity as you go
Because the air smells sweeter where you’ve been
And I, shy and unsure
Cower like a beast
Defenses raised
Fierce and ashamed
as you draw near
But you tell me to look up at the stars
And you tell me that your love for me is greater than all those galaxies combined
And though these creations are great and glorious, you say you identify with me
You give me living water to drink
And nourish me with your own heart
You hold out your hand to me
And I cautiously take it
And I stand upright and walk beside you
Watching the way the wind touches your hair—
It’s real hair
And I walk through the trees with you
Bolder in every step
And soon the little birds are landing on me too
